Business internet is the connection that carries a company’s traffic between its office network and the world outside. It is 9:20am on a Wednesday in a Christchurch office. Nobody can open a file, the phones are silent, the card terminal is declining every transaction, and three people are standing in reception looking at a router.
Someone rings the provider and joins a queue. A contractor two streets away put a digger through a cable at seven that morning, and the answer, eventually, is that a crew will be on site sometime tomorrow.
By lunchtime the office has lost a morning of billable work, missed two client meetings, taken no payments, and answered none of its calls. None of it was planned for, because the business internet connection had always just worked.

What Is the Difference Between Business Internet and Home Broadband?

The difference between business internet and home broadband is what happens after something goes wrong. The fibre in the ground is often identical, and the price difference buys contracted response times, support with an escalation path, and a service provisioned for a building full of people instead of a household.
Plenty of small businesses run on a consumer plan for years without incident, and it looks like money saved. It stays money saved until the morning the connection fails and the queue you are waiting in is the residential one.

Contention, or who else is using your connection

Contention ratio describes how many other customers share the capacity sitting behind your business internet connection. Consumer plans are priced on the assumption that most households are idle through the working day, so that shared capacity is thinner and the evening peak is somebody else’s problem.
A business internet service is provisioned for sustained daytime use, when the whole team is on video calls, syncing files, and running cloud applications at the same time. A consumer plan advertised at the same speed can feel noticeably slower in a busy office at two in the afternoon.

A service level with teeth

The service level agreement, or SLA, is the part of a business internet contract most people skip. It sets out the target restoration time once a fault is raised, the hours support is actually staffed, and whether you get a named escalation path or a ticket in a queue.
Ask what the provider commits to in writing, and ask what happens when they miss it. A consumer plan promises nothing beyond best effort, which on a bad day means several days without a connection while the business absorbs the cost.

Static IP addresses and remote access

Business internet usually includes a static IP address, a fixed address that stays the same every time the connection restarts.
Remote access to an on-premises server, a site-to-site VPN between a Christchurch office and a Dunedin one, cameras you can check from home, and line-of-business systems that expect a known address all depend on that address holding still. Businesses that save the small monthly fee end up paying for workarounds instead.

How Much Internet Speed Does a Business Need?

Most small businesses are well served by one hundred to three hundred megabits, and consistency matters more than the headline number. Ten people work comfortably on a well-provisioned hundred megabit business internet connection, and the same ten will struggle on a gigabit plan that drops packets every afternoon.
The headline number is the wrong question to start with. What matters is everything sharing your business internet connection during a normal working hour, and whether there is headroom left when all of it happens at once.

Everything riding on one connection

On an ordinary weekday, a single business internet connection is carrying:

  • VoIP and Teams calls, which need steady low latency more than raw speed
  • Video meetings, several at a time in most offices
  • Offsite backup, which can upload for hours
  • Remote access for staff working from home or from a site

  • Software updates, which arrive whenever the vendor decides

Each of those is modest on its own. A backup running at full speed through business hours while eight people are on calls turns a healthy connection into a slow one, and the fix is usually scheduling and traffic priority instead of more bandwidth.

Sizing a connection without guessing

Sizing a business internet connection is a counting exercise rather than a judgement call. Work out how many staff are online at once, how many are likely to be on a video call at the busiest part of the day, whether the main applications live in the cloud or on a server in the building, and how much data leaves the site overnight for backup.
A twelve-person accounting practice with everything in the cloud has a different profile from a six-person design office pushing multi-gigabyte files to clients. The practice needs steady capacity for many small transactions all day. The design office needs upload headroom in bursts.
Site conditions matter as much as the count. A building already fibre-fed is a straightforward install, and a standalone site with no fibre at the boundary can mean weeks of lead time.

Why upload speed matters more than download

Upload capacity gets overlooked because consumer plans are marketed on download. Business traffic runs the other way. Sending a video call, pushing a backup offsite, sharing a large drawing set, and hosting remote access all consume upload.
A connection with generous download and a thin upload path produces the symptoms people usually blame on WiFi: calls breaking up, files stuck at ninety percent, and a remote session where the cursor lags behind the mouse.

Is the Problem the Connection or the Office Network?

Business internet covers everything from the wall socket outward, and the office network covers everything inside the building. Faults get blamed on the wrong half of that boundary constantly, which is how businesses end up paying to upgrade a connection that was working fine.

The part inside the building

Inside the building, business WiFi covers how staff devices reach the network. When performance is poor in one corner of the office and fine everywhere else, the access points are the first place to look, and the connection is rarely the cause.

The wiring underneath both

Underneath both sits the network cabling, and poor cabling produces symptoms that look exactly like a bad connection. A gigabit business internet service delivered over a damaged cable run or a decade-old switch never arrives at the desk at full speed.
Before paying to upgrade business internet, check the cabling, the switch, and the access points. The fault sits on the inside of the socket often enough to be worth ruling out first.

What Does an Hour Offline Actually Cost?

An hour offline costs a fifteen-person business around seven hundred and fifty dollars in wages alone, before a single lost sale is counted. That is more than a month of the backup connection that would have prevented it, and very few owners have ever done the arithmetic.
Run it with your own numbers. Multiply headcount by an average hourly employment cost, then by the hours you would lose. For the business above, a whole morning with no business internet is three thousand dollars of paid time, and that figure assumes everybody finds something useful to do with the wait.
Then add what stops completely. Quotes are not sent, invoices are not raised, calls go unanswered, payments are not processed, and the onboarding booked for that afternoon moves to next week. For a retail or trade operation the lost revenue lands harder than the wages, because the till stops.

The costs that arrive later

Some costs of a long outage only surface weeks later:

  • Offsite backups that missed their window entirely
  • Compliance and reporting deadlines pushed past their due date
  • A customer who could not reach you and rang a competitor instead
  • Card payments written on paper and keyed in later, with the errors that follow

None of it shows up as a line on a bill, so it rarely gets counted when someone is pricing up a backup connection.

How Does Internet Failover Work?

Internet failover works by giving the business a second connection on a different physical path plus a router configured to move traffic across to it on its own when the primary fails. Set up correctly, staff notice a short pause in a video call and nothing more.
The switch has to happen without anyone being asked to make it. A spare modem in a drawer does not count as business internet failover, and neither does one person tethering to a phone hotspot while everybody else waits for news.

What a failover setup looks like

A working failover arrangement has four parts: the primary business internet connection, a secondary connection that does not share the same physical route, a router or firewall that monitors the primary and switches over without being asked, and a tested cutover so you know what happens before it matters.
The second part is the one that gets missed. A second fibre service from a different provider that runs down the same street duct fails at the same moment as the first, and the digger does not care whose logo is on the invoice.

What failover does not do

Failover keeps a business trading, usually at reduced capacity. A mobile backup connection will carry email, phones, card payments, and cloud applications for a team of fifteen. It will not carry eight video meetings and a full offsite backup at the same time.
So decide in advance what gets priority while the business is running on the backup path. Voice, payments, and core applications come first, and the heavy uploads can wait until the primary line is repaired.

What Are the Options for a Second Connection?

The realistic options for a second business internet connection are another fibre service on a separate physical path, a fixed wireless link, a mobile 4G or 5G connection, or satellite where nothing else reaches. Which one fits depends on the site and on how long the business can afford to sit still.

  • Second fibre on a different path: the strongest option wherever a genuinely separate route exists, which the provider should confirm in writing before you sign
  • Fixed wireless: a radio link to a nearby tower, independent of the fibre in the ground, and sensibly priced as a backup
  • Mobile 4G or 5G failover: the common choice for small offices, quick to install, and dependent on cellular coverage at the building

How Do You Choose a Business Internet Provider?

Choose a business internet provider on fault response and on how straight they are about what they control, and treat the monthly price as the last question. Most providers in New Zealand resell capacity over the same Chorus and local fibre company networks built under the UFB programme, so the service wrapped around that capacity is where they differ.
Six questions to ask before signing anything:

  • What is the target restoration time for a fault, and is it written into the contract?
  • Who answers the phone at seven in the morning, and where are they based?
  • Is a static IP address included?
  • Do you supply and support the router, or does that fall to us?
  • What failover options do you offer, and can they be managed through our firewall?
  • What happens to the price at the end of the term?

The answers describe what a bad day will look like. If a provider will not put a restoration time in writing, work on the basis that there is not one.

When the support desk opens

Support hours decide how much of an outage the business wears. A fault reported at seven and picked up at nine has already cost two hours of trading, and plenty of business internet plans run business-hours support despite being sold to businesses that open well before them.
Ask when support opens, whether after-hours faults reach a person or a voicemail, and where that person sits. A South Island business dealing with an offshore contact centre on a different clock finds that out on its first serious fault.
Ask how a cut cable gets escalated to the network operator. A provider who can explain that process has clearly done it before.

Watching the connection instead of waiting for complaints
